LOS ANGELES -- Two days after being blindsided in Texas, the Los Angeles Lakers returned the favor.
Kobe Bryant needed only three quarters to score 26 points and the Lakers bounced back from their Game 4 flop, routing the Houston Rockets 118-78 on Tuesday night to take a 3-2 lead in the Western Conference semifinals.
Fast Facts
• The Lakers' last 40-point win came against the Spurs in the first round of the 1986 playoffs.
• Phil Jackson became the first coach to reach 200 wins in the postseason.
• The Rockets tied a franchise record for largest loss in a playoff game.
-- ESPN Stats & Information
The top-seeded Lakers did everything they didn't do in Sunday's 99-87 loss at Houston -- hustled, rebounded and played tight defense on Houston's smaller lineup, keeping Aaron Brooks in check and limiting wide-open shots.
On Sunday the Lakers trailed by 29 points. On Tuesday night, they had a 29-point lead by late in the second quarter, on a 3-pointer by Bryant, who led seven Lakers in double figures.
The 40-point margin tied the Rockets' worst playoff loss ever. They lost to the Dallas Mavericks 116-76 on May 7, 2005.
The Lakers can wrap up the series Thursday night in Houston.
Then again, they've been prone to lapses in these playoffs, which is probably why Bryant warned that it's not going to be easy to finish off the Rockets.
"We've got to stay focused and understand that the effort we gave tonight is not going to be enough on Thursday. It's just not," Bryant said. "We're not playing some chump team. I don't care how many people they have out. This is a tough team, it's a tough team full of competitors."

The Rockets played their second game without Yao Ming, who sustained a season-ending stress fracture in his left foot in Game 3.
Bryant looked more like himself after being held to 15 points on Sunday. With the Lakers far ahead after holding the Rockets to only 15 points in each of the second and third quarters, he sat out the fourth period.
"We played just the opposite we did the last game," Houston coach Rick Adelman said. "We turned it over in the first half, shot it poorly. We said if we turn it over against this team we're going to be in big trouble. That's exactly what we did.
"It just kind of fed their energy level. The second and third quarters are about as bad as we've played in a long time."
Pau Gasol had 16 points and 13 rebounds, Andrew Bynum 14 points, Trevor Ariza 13 and Jordan Farmar 12. Lamar Odom and Josh Powell had 10 apiece.
Brooks was held to 14 points after scoring a career-high 34 on Sunday. Ron Artest had a horrible night shooting, 4-of-15 for nine points. The Rockets shot only 32 percent.
"There are seven games. That is the great thing about the playoffs," Artest said. "It is not like football where there is one game, so you can only stay positive."
Houston had an early lead, but Chuck Hayes, who replaced Yao, picked up his second foul by midway through the first quarter.
The Lakers gained control by outscoring Houston 23-6 during the final six minutes of the first quarter. Bryant had eight points, making three straight shots at one point. Odom sank a 3-pointer and Farmar another 3 at the buzzer for a 35-24 lead.
"We just made our adjustments, really," Bryant said. "The last game they played a different style, a little bit more uptempo, spread the floor out a little bit. They got off to a great start and we never recovered.
"Tonight we did a good job covering for our defensive assignments. We didn't blow too many of those; made plays."
The Rockets had nine turnovers in the first half.
"We had a good first couple of minutes and then we started to turn the ball over," Artest said. "But we are going to adjust. That is the thing with the Houston Rockets."
With Bryant sitting out at the start of the second quarter, the Lakers didn't lose any of their intensity, going on an 8-0 run to push the lead to 43-24. Gasol made a hook shot and two free throws, Odom made two free throws and Sasha Vujacic blocked a shot by Von Wafer, raced down the court and took a pass from Gasol for a slam dunk.
With Houston going cold, the Lakers piled it on, taking a 64-35 lead on Bryant's 3-pointer with 1:31 before halftime. It was 64-39 at the break.
Game notesOdom didn't start, but entered the game late in the first quarter in place of Bynum. Odom had been listed as questionable with a bruised back, the result of taking a hard fall on Sunday. ... Luke Walton had six rebounds off the bench for the Lakers. ... Red Hot Chili Peppers bassist Flea played the national anthem. He didn't remove his black hat.

Lakers win testy NBA West playoff tilt with Rockets

LOS ANGELES (AFP) — Kobe Bryant scored 40 points to lead the Los Angeles Lakers to a 111-98 win over the Houston Rockets in a testy playoff battle that included ejections, numerous fouls and words exchanged between both sides.
Houston's Ron Artest and Lakers guard Derek Fisher were the two biggest combatants and were thrown out for separate incidents as the Lakers levelled the best-of-seven series at 1-1.
"We fired back. Playoffs are very physical. We have to fight back," Rockets Yao Ming said.
Artest finished with 25 points while giant Chinese centre Yao had 12 points and 10 rebounds. Carl Landry had 21 points and 10 rebounds for Houston.
Both teams will now wait to see if the league's disciplinary committee decides to had out suspensions before Friday's game three of the series.
There were a total of two ejections and five technical fouls handed out by the officials on Wednesday.
Bryant, Artest, Luis Scola, Luke Walton and Lamar Odom were all slapped with technicals.
"If you are going to be physical you have to expect people to be physical back," Bryant said.
The fireworks began in the final 30 seconds of the third quarter as Fisher threw a body check that floored Scola after the latter tried to set a pick.
Bryant and Artest were involved in the main event of the evening with just under seven minutes left in the game. Artest, who has been given the role of guarding the Lakers superstar, said Bryant elbowed him under the basket and he wasn't going to take it anymore.
After pleading unsuccessfully with the officials for a foul, Artest sprinted across the court and engaged Bryant face-to-face.
"I am getting tired of this guy," Artest said of Bryant. "I never threw an elbow at his face. I went over there and there were no punches, I didn't shove him in the face ... just a confrontation and then I backed off."
"I told (Bryant) to relax. 'You hit wrong person ... don't you know you are hitting Ron Artest'.
"I am not going to retaliate. I did that stuff when I was in high school and I am done with that."
Artest says he is trying to control his temper which has got him in trouble with NBA brass in the past. He describes himself as a product of the America's crime-ridden and drug plagued ghettos where basketball games can turn deadly in an instant.
"I used to play back home in the neighbourhood games like that," Artest said. "I remember one game. This guy I played with. The other team got mad and they broke a piece lead from a table and they threw it at him and it went through his heart and he died.
"So I am use to fighting on court. That is how I grew up playing basketball."
Bryant, of course, had a much different upbringing as a third-culture kid in Italy where his expatriate father played professional ball.
"It wasn't anything malicious," Bryant said of the contact with Artest under the basket. "I was just trying to establish position."
The Lakers seized a 14-point lead at the end of the first quarter but Houston battled back to tie the game at halftime.
Yao ran into foul trouble early, collecting three fouls in the first half.
Lakers coach Phil Jackson said he doesn't expect his players to back down in the remaining games in the series.
"Unfortunately the end of third quarter took erratic turn. But it set tone for what is going to happen later in this series," Jackson said.
Fisher defended his hard check on Scola and said there was no intent to injure.
"I knew they were going to run a high screen roll and we had a foul to give," he said. "My intent was to run through the pick hard. I don't agree with an ejection, but I understand Joe's position and wanting to get the game under control. Hopefully there won't be any suspensions involved."

did the wildfires affect toursim in Myrtle Beach

Though 80 percent contained, Highway 31 Fire that has scorched more than 20,000 acres of Horry County, destroyed 70 homes and damaged more than 100 others remains dangerous and a force to be reckoned with.

With this being said you would think that Myrtle Beach is deffenantly going to have some problems with tourism this summer...

But infact:
As some locals in the Horry County area return to find their homes destroyed or severely damaged, Nancy Gray with the City of Myrtle Beach says the location of the fire hasn’t effected tourism.
“Business is usual for our visitors, the weather is gorgeous and the resort area is open. The Horry County wildfire is impacting west of the inter-coastal waterway and for our visitors that means that most attractions and hotels are not affected,” says Gray.
Gray says those particular facilities are east of the intercoastal waterways, so visitors will not really notice any changes to the area.

random but cute

North Myrtle Beach, SC - A blaze burned more than 18,000 acres in North Myrtle Beach. Around 2,500 residents were evacuated from the area west of Highway 31 in the Barefoot Resort community. Officials say this fire is one of the worst in South Carolina's history.
"South Carolinians dont experience this. We experience hurricanes, wild wind fires of this magnitude. No one can remember a fire that has caused so much damage and loss of property," said Pete Rogers with the S.C. Incident Management Team. Thursday night, S.C. Forestry Commission officials said the fire was 40% contained.

Rogers says North Myrtle Beach officials will re-evaluate the fire on Friday morning to determine if more residents will be allowed back to the area.
Forestry commission officials say a fire that started burning in the Woodlawn subdivision on Highway 90 may have led to the larger wildfire. They have given that individual two tickets and are further investigating the matter to determine indefinetely if it was the cause.

The New Hard RocK

1. Will the new management be successful with the new theme?
i think so; they should keep the name

2. What are some things you would add to the theme park if you were the new management?
Many of the rides, restaurants and areas in the park are being re-themed, and FPI is developing musical and live stage show acts, the statement says. ( i agree with what changes are already being made)

3. How will the economy effect tourism to this theme park if it isn't associated with Hard Rock?
since the name has changed it might draw tourists to the theme park because if they went out and changed the name then they know the park has most likely been upgraded/changed

1. Will these discounts work?
i think that it will because more people will buy if they feel that they are getting a better price.

for some yes, but people are still receiving bonuses so i think they might have to cut back on how much they vacation but not cut it out all together.

3. Does it hurt in state residents decision to travel to in state vacation areas?
no; the cost of gas or flying would be cheaper.

4. Would it hurt the economy more to offer these discounts?

The American Pie Factory

i think that they will do if they offer good tasting food and amazing customer service but like other restaurants business might slow down some after being opened for a while.

3. With the economy, how can they make sure this business survives?
not getting themselves in too deep. they need to start small and as the economy changes make those changes along with it.

4. How would you market this business to possible customers? Give your best sales pitch!!

ENTREPRENEURSHiP

1. What are your thoughts on the comments on this article?
i think that Alan touches on some good points

2. Visit this blog and give your comments on what is said about entrepreneurship?
Two types of entrepreneurs exist: the “caught between a rock and a hard place” entrepreneur, and the serial entrepreneur. (Alan)
i agree with the statement, "there are two types of entrepreneurs". and basically i think what he is trying to say is that there are entrepreneurs that start up their own business; but unfortunately they don't know where to start or become lazy and the business goes down the drain...

c. What is the average theft amount per incident
· Anywhere up to $1,058 per person annually.

LAKELAND Law enforcement arrest teams throughout Central Florida today served five search warrants and arrested up to 18 people related to a multi-million dollar retail theft ring and fencing operation involving health, beauty and cosmetic products and over-the-counter medicines, according to the Polk County Sheriff's Office. Each of the suspects is being charged with one count of felony racketeering, which carries a maximum penalty of 30 years in prison, and one count of felony conspiracy to commit racketeering, which carries a maximum penalty of 15 years in prison.
“What started as a simple shoplifting investigation turned into the discovery of a far flung criminal conspiracy that counted on common street criminals to steal millions of dollars of merchandise to supply other criminals selling on the Internet and in flea markets. Because of our talented investigators and team work with multiple agencies, these thieves and criminal resellers will be going away to prison for a long, long time,” Sheriff Grady Judd said.
The arrests come at the end of a seven-month long investigation that began June 26 when Rita Maddox, currently in the Hillsborough County Jail, and Elisha Cordle of Dover were arrested by Polk County Sheriff’s Office deputies for stealing about $4,500 in merchandise, mainly Oil of Olay products, from the Shepherd Road Publix in Lakeland, according to the Sheriff's Office.
The initial investigation into the retail theft revealed that the suspects were part of a larger organized criminal enterprise that operated in multiple jurisdictions.
The investigation further uncovered that the theft and fencing operation had been operating for about five years and is linked to retail loss statewide, the Sheriff's Office said.
· This article proves that retail theft is a serious crime; and if you get caught you will pay time. More and more retail theft is going on throughout the states and law enforcers are doing everything they can to try and prevent shoppers from stealing.
g. Why do you think people shoplift?
I think that people shoplift one because they want something but don’t have the money or want to spend the money to get it legally; therefore they shoplift. Also, I think that some do it for the “thrill”/ adrenaline rush or the fact that they like the thought that they are getting away with it.

h. What are the advantages for a retailers using source tagging?
Enables them to ensure solid in-stock positions
Maximize inventory turns
Reduce shoplifting losses
i. Do you think About retail industry would be a good source for information for a business owner. Who or why not?
· I do not agree that “About retail industry” is a good source for information for a business owner. This website does give accurate information, but when you type in your question it is too complicated to try and find what answer you’re looking for because it give you information about the main word in the question. Those are the reason’s I had to resort back to “Google” to find my answers because “About.com” just wasn’t doing it for me. :D

Finding a Solution to SC's Unemployment Rate

1. Post your thoughts.2. What could be done about the growing number of jobless that are not meeting the specifications of the open jobs in South Carolina.

IN CONCLUSION"
the article it was stated that, "The task of putting the jobless to work is complicated by a gap between the skills of jobless workers and the skills wanted by companies that are hiring, said Stephen Marshall, deputy executive director of the S.C. Employment Security Commission."
i think that a solution would be to create a quick but accurate system that trains applicants to learn what they need to know for the job and maybe even teach them other jobs in the company in case down the road they are needed in another department of the company. this will eliminate them not being qualified and not having to fire the persons if the job becomes filled.

Coffee back on the market

1. Is it wise for Starbucks to try to enter the "fastfood" fields with McDonalds and Dunkin Donuts?
if they can lower their prices then yes; because the reason they are losing so much business to McDonalds and Dunkin Donuts is because they have cheaper products to offer.

2. Do you think they will be successful?
only if they lower their prices.

3. What are some ways that Starbucks can compete or gain customers without entering a battle with Fast Food companies?
they could advertise more on television...

Fiening Phelps Get's Caught!

1. Would you as a sponsor continue to give money to Michael Phelps?
Yes; because he is a young male and i'm sure most can relate back to being at that age. Also understanding that he is under a lot of new found pressure can help fans relate to what bad choices Phelps has/may undergo.

2. Would you as a business owner still pay Phelps money to Market your products?
Honestly, i would probably cut back on how much money and publicity is spent on him while things die down...

3. Post your thoughts about the situation.
I don't really have any thoughts about this situation. Statistics show that 42.4% of males students have used marijuana. and those numbers are just from high school students. Phelps is 23 and is becoming a nationwide icon. sometimes when one is under a lot of stress they may make bad decisions trying to escape reality.

New Packaging by Kellogg

Does the new Kellogg test box signal the beginning of the end for the current cereal box?
i think that it is too early to tell if all cereal boxes will be modified to Kellogg's new design; but if it has a good turn out, then yes i'm sure other cereal brands will change their packaging to the newer version.

What do you see as the benefits and/or drawbacks to the new box design?
Benefits:
-spending less money on packaging and even shipping cost (not by much)
-more geometrically friendly
Drawbacks:
-some say that the new boxes are harder to fit in their "cupboards" (geometrically friendly...maybe not so much)
-Might lose sales while evaluating the new improved boxes (people will see smaller boxes and think they are getting less for their money and go to a different brand)

2. Is it wise to target consumers who are in driving distance?

I think it is very smart to target consumers in driving distance because times are hard and they wont have to pay for traveling expenses.

3. Is this slogan enough to catch your attention as a tourist?

Verizon-Alltel Merger

So. Verizon's buying Alltel. Worried your Alltel service is going away? It's looking like that may not happen until 2009 - or even 2010.
I started thinking about this when I saw the news story today that the Department of Justice is asking Verizon to divest certain markets they bought as part of their purchase of Rural Cellular, which happened in July 2007. Yes, it's been 11 months and that acquisition still hasn't closed.
But that's par for the course for wireless company acquisitions. They're complicated. AT&T and Cingular proposed to merge on Feb. 17, 2004. The merger closed on October 26, and the company finally retired the AT&T brand on April 26, 2005. So that's 14 months. T-Mobile recently picked up SunCom; the merger was announced on September 17, it closed on Feb. 22, and T-Mobile told me recently that SunCom would vanish sometime around the third quarter of this year. So - a year, again. Alltel said they were buying Western Wireless in January 2005. The merger closed in August, but the brand didn't go away until 2006.
There are some complicated political issues that Verizon/Alltel must work out, too.
Let's start with the currently unsettled political situation. Verizon and Alltel have said they hope to close the deal by the end of the year. That requires a lot of government approvals. Hm - what's going to be happening in the federal government between early November 2008 and mid January 2009? Lots of personnel shuffling, and very little decision making. That's one brake on things.
There's a general rule that the FCC has followed so far, that one carrier shouldn't own both halves of the 850 Mhz cellular block in a market. So I'm assuming the FCC will ask Verizon to divest markets where both they and Alltel hold 850 Mhz spectrum. According to these maps, that includes counties in pretty much every state in the Mountain time zone, Minnesota, Iowa, Michigan, Ohio, Virginia, both Carolinas, Georgia and Alabama. They'll have to find buyers for that spectrum, too. Could that happen? Sure. Will it take time? You bet.
Once they've sorted out that mess, they're going to have to deal with the fact that Verizon has a reputation for relatively high rates. Great coverage, terrific customer service, but high rates. If I were a senator from, say, Arkansas, you bet I'd run an inquest into whether rates for existing Alltel customers in Little Rock will shoot up once they try to renew their plans.
So fear not, Alltel subscribers, at least not in the short term. Verizon has a long row to hoe before they can gobble up and completely eradicate everything you like about your cell phone service.

$uper Bowl Ads

1. What are you thoughts on a company spending this type of money on an advertisement?
i think that it is absolutely insane that people are more than willing to get their advertisements shown during the Super Bowl. i understand that it is the best time to have your commercial watched because such a great number of people are watching and even after the Super Bowl the commercial will be ranked and talked about for the following week on the internet and radio. So if you have the money then sure...

2. If you were a business owner or CEO would you spend this type of money to advertise?
if i had the money and if i knew that it was going to get my businesses name a lot more recognition then yes i would.

3. Do you think that the Super Bowl could bring a company that much more business than other times?
since Super Bowl commercials are the reason why some viewers even watch, i do believe that it might bring a company more business but i don't think as much as they pay for it for some.

4. If you didn't advertise during the Super Bowl, what event would you focus most of campaign on?
i would focus most of my campaigning during all of the award serimonies for movies and celebrities because that has a good cluster of people watching and i could get more than one target markets attention.

5. Would this be a great place to spring board a campaign?
i think that it would be for the larger companies. then again, it could get a company that is just starting out all of its recognition if they have a good commercial because that's the only thing that people are going to have to go off of about your business.

Coca-Cola Co.

1.What are your thoughts about Coca-Cola's new marketing campaign to push people back towards softdrinks?
Personally i myself don't drink softdrinks so i feel that all of my answer are going to be bias and lean towards this being a bad idea; but any new advertising campaigns should get consumers attention.

2. Do you think it will be successful?
I think that lowering the price of Coke (Zero/Diet), Sprite and Fanta to $0.99 will increase sales, but i don't know if it will bring Coca-Cola back where they were before the beginning of last year since they are competing with PepsiCo Inc.

3. Will the new bottle and lower price be enough to attract customers back to softdrinks?
When i buy drinks looking at how "cute" or "attractive" the bottle is plays a factor on if i purchase the drink or not, so hopefully it will help attract customers back to softdirnks.

4. Do celebrity spokespersons really help sell goods or services? will it work here?
Coca-Cola mentioned that they wanted to attract younger customers and i think using a celebrity spokesperson is a great way to get that target markets attention.
